Burt is the Deadly Creations resident African Pygmy Hedgehog and this is his collection, with every purchase securing £5 of the price you pay being donated to the Happy Quills Rescue & Rehoming (opens in a new tab) charity who provide essential care, medical treatment and a safe space for injured or orphaned hedgehogs until they are ready for a new home.
Burt provides vital input into the creative process by sniffing out the best matches of beads and accessories, and is the perfect late night familiar to accompany the creation of these ethereal treasures.
Burt is also very passionate about helping other hedgehogs when they are in need. He has therefore teamed up with Happy Quills Rescue & Rehoming (opens in a new tab) and together Burt and I have designed a collection with a mission; to support the ongoing funds needed to perform the vital work of rescuing and rehoming hedgehogs in need.
More about Burt …
Burt came to me when my husband and I were volunteering at a rescue centre for wild hedgehogs, and because I had a broken leg, I couldn’t really do much. While generally sitting around and getting in the way, I was asked to cuddle a baby African Pygmy Hedgehog who had been handed in.
The rescue didn’t deal with African Pygmy Hedgehogs and didn’t have a full set up to meet his needs long term, however were doing the best they could for this little guy. It was December 2022, cold, raining, windy, and what this baby needed was a home. Well, what do you all think happened when my husband and I learned he would be spending Christmas alone in the rescue … yep, he came home with us that day and became a beloved member of our family.
At 4 years and 4 months old, Burt is an older gentleman who loves to sleep, snuggle and eat “wormies”. He also loves his cat food, kibble, and on occasion, a cat treat too. He was very clear with me about his dislike for any kind of fruit or vegetable. He runs on his wheel at night, though as a rule is a lazy sort of chap who leans more towards the luxurious and relaxing side of life. He likes to chew my hair when it is freshly dyed; he is not allowed to do this, though he does not care about whether or not he is allowed, and he proceeds to try his best to chomp anyway 🙂
Burt has lots of other hedgehog friends who are located all around the world, and he regularly updates his Instagram account to let his friends know what he is up to. He loves to check out his friends’ adventures too.
Anything spooky is right up Burt’s street. African Pygmy Hedgehogs love mint and he has many little mint stuffies; ghosts, planchettes, Ouija boards, a mandrake, a Marauder’s Map, a wizard’s hat … well, you get the idea 🙂
Burt also loves to come out with us on adventures. He loves a visit to Scotland and has visited many times, including Scottish isles. He has been camping with us, has visited museums, enjoyed playing on the beach, found golden hedgehog statues in forests and snuggled inside of my rain coat on boat trips. Burt is always very well cared for and kept warm and comfortable on his adventures, before returning safely home to his luxurious heated condo where he can run on his wheel or sploot under his heat lamp.
